EAL / Extra Support Guide

The same NEA Design Project as the rest of 11DTf/11DTd, broken into smaller steps with simpler English. Same deadline as the whole class: Friday 11 December 2026.

Show → Guide → Do

Golden rule: demonstrate first, then guide the student's hands through the same step, then let them repeat it alone. Each step uses short sentences, one instruction per line, a picture cue to point to, and a sentence starter so students complete rather than compose from nothing.

  • I chose ___ because ___.
  • I used ___ to make ___.
  • This step went well because ___.
  • Next time I would change ___ because ___.
  • My product does / does not meet the specification because ___.

Stage-by-stage hand-guided steps

1. Development of the Proposed Solution

  1. Look at your final design. Point to 3 parts you are not sure about.
  2. Teacher/TA shows the materials word-mat. Circle ONE material per part.
  3. Pick ONE surface finish and complete: “I chose ___ because ___.”
  4. Teacher/TA demonstrates labelling a working drawing. Copy onto your own drawing, one label at a time.
  5. Fill in the cutting list table together, one row at a time.
  6. Build a quick paper/card model. Take a photo. Complete: “I used ___ to make ___.”

2. Planning for Production

  1. Use picture cards of each making step. Put them in order on the table.
  2. Copy the order onto the production plan sheet.
  3. Count lessons left. Write one number next to each step.
  4. Match tool picture cards to tool names and one safety rule each.
  5. Tick a QC checkpoint after each step on the plan.

3. Manufacture

  1. Teacher/TA demonstrates the step fully first.
  2. Guide the student's hands through the same step.
  3. Student repeats the step alone, teacher/TA nearby.
  4. Take a before and after photo every session.
  5. Complete one caption per photo: “I used ___ to make ___.”
  6. Tick the step off on the Student Tracker.

4. Testing & Evaluation

  1. Read the specification aloud, one point at a time.
  2. For each point, answer Yes / No / Partly and point to the evidence.
  3. Complete 5 sentences using the sentence starters.
  4. Take final photos of the finished product.

5. Finishing

  1. Check folder pages are in the right order using a picture checklist.
  2. Hand in by Friday 11 December 2026.

Worst-Case Scenario — Minimum Viable Plan

Use this if a student reaches Week 10 (early November) and is still stuck at Development or early Planning. The goal is a smaller, simpler, but complete and honestly evidenced project — not a perfect one.

Reduce scope, not honesty

  • Simplify the design to fewer parts / one main material where possible
  • Cutting list: 3–5 items maximum; the table may be pre-filled for the student to copy and check
  • Working drawing: one clear labelled sketch is enough — full orthographic views are not required
  • Production plan: a simple numbered list (5–8 steps) instead of a full flow chart
  • Manufacture: prioritise a real, finished product over extra detail — photograph every step
  • Evaluation: 5 sentence-starter answers is enough — no extended essay required
  • Teacher/TA may scribe while the student dictates, then the student copies it in their own handwriting

Non-negotiable minimum for a gradable submission

Progress is saved in this browser only — nothing is uploaded.

Trigger points (Week 9/10 checkpoint)

  • The student has not started cutting/making by the Week 9/10 checkpoint, or
  • Fewer than half of their support sessions this term have produced a completed step on the tracker
